How to Freestyle Rap and Possess the Rapper Eater Monster MC That You Want to Be

by Mandi Smith aka SALT

A multitude of words developed in the blink of a second that not only rhyme but hold the attention of an audience while portraying a metaphor within a story, and tearing down your opponent, that is freestyle rap, and freestyle rap is a skill.

“Possess the rapper eater monster MC that you want to be”

With any skill you must learn from the bottom up, and practice, practice, practice. It is true that a freestyle rapper needs to be quick witted, knowledgeable of metaphors, and puns, plus great at talking smack.

Honestly you do not even need a large vocabulary, but you should. You can teach yourself how to be all these things and possess the rapper eater monster MC that you want to be.

Easy Peaszy.

No one can just bust a freestyle fresh and smooth the first time. So, do not get discouraged if your first attempt is lame as fudge. Fudge is not lame, but you get what I mean. Starting with babble talk is the best way, and you can do it anywhere. You can do it in the shower, while your jogging, cooking, cleaning, working. Start like this, “cleaning the tub, rub a dub, and I got some suds, in my cup, is some bub, and a.”

Play with the vowel’s sounds and elongate the word if you want like, “Ear-a you can hear-a make it clear-a till it disappear-a in the mirr-a don’t interfere-a.”

Instead of jump you can say “Joump, Joump, get to choump, choumpin on a boump strait loucked in.”

Using near rhymes gives strategy to your word play, because you can straddle off and weave your way into another rhyme scheme like,

“You know I tried, did what you said, I flew a kite, filled with regret, now I got the knife, see my eyes, ooo, ooo she so fine, so divine, just my type, and I.”

After mastering those steps, start by rhyming more than just one word, try two, or three, until you can rhyme whole sentences, like bubble cup, double up, rubble wassup, cuddle in the cut, or do a shovel strut, ride or die baby number one. Cumbersome, thunder bump, beat em up.

PLAY WITH YOUR WORDS!

If you get stuck use that same Kindergarten trick and make up words that rhyme until you get back on track.

Keep the flow going, and add instrumentals for balance and cadence.

-Syllables expand sentences bringing dimension to what you are saying. — “Terrible demand for benzes ringing questions move butts so we’re jamming.”

Cutting words in half using both parts to redirect a part of your flow is another style, like

“This rhyme touched a nerve the struc- shirt fitted witta slacks blending no cap Entiendo, so all my foes realize I got the mind tolled stepping through the door, story unfold, pay up mo-fos.”

Spring an idea from a word or a sentence like,

“Take your turn, but you know I fill your urn, ashes to ashes dust your serve, you I must curb, I’m waiting and you fading from the earth, MC’s I’m eliminating, you out, I’m first.”

“Clock your nerves, clock you slur, clock your serve, I’m the clocking nurse, Clock, your words, clock your purse, give me your money, Ima clock your worth, I’ll even clock your turf, clock your turn, definitely clock your burn, I’m a clocking curse, I clocked, your merced, you got clocked by the clock that’s worse.”

Building swift metaphors is dire when trying to win over a crowd like,“My mouth is wicked like a forced code, binary with the digits, your 0 I’m 1. Line em all in a row. I’ll get the bitty.”

And, “All eyes on me, while my wrist speaks, I get watched, no cable T.V and no scripted materi-al, you’re dead meat, I’m raw.”

To rap you need to let your brain run your mouth, literally. You brain is always a step ahead. Listen and speak all while implanting ideas in your head. Easy right?

Not really, but with practice comes perfection. Freestyle writing is a main factor in your progression as a freestyle rapper. You should write every day in a journal. Especially if you want to be an artist this is key.

When you first start, writing do not try to rhyme, just write, and what you will find is that you will naturally write in rhyme. Do not edit for a song just yet. Read it out loud about 10 times and listen to what it is you are trying to express.

Circle all the rhyme schemes that were written within your pages, and you will see an embedded web structure of rhyme. The more you write the better you get. You can find hit hooks from an emotion filled journal page, so be on the lookout for that too.

Another good way to keep you on the right track is setting a timer starting at 5 minutes and work your way up. Recording yourself to on your phone recorder will help you hear how you sound. I have to say it again, do not get discouraged if you do not sound like a cypher battle verse slayer at first.

Freestyle rap is like learning a new language, and to battle someone is like a debate. You must know what they are about and use it in your flows. Battles are like debates or presidential election campaigns. That is why being quick with your tongue helps when you need fast rebuttals with awareness to their faults.

So, use these strategies and you will be on your way to being a beat eating, MC shaking, verse pumping freestyle rap monster in no time.
